Children and Chiropractic
I am a father of two young boys. My eldest is 4 and my youngest is 2. Throughout my wife’s pregnancies, I always had the deep desire that my children would be healthy. This desire became anxious during her labour and especially as the boys were born. All parents probably want the same – a healthy child that remains healthy. We want children who are strong mentally and physically- to live to the fullest of their potential. We nourish them with mental and physical stimulation, but most of all with love. We read them books, sing songs, crawl with them on the floor, and jump around with goofy faces just to make them laugh. We nurture them with good nutrition, exercise, learning, and with hugs and kisses.
In addition, I do something a little different that more and more families are doing everyday; I check my boys spines regularly for Vertebral Subluxations. This includes misalignment in the spine (small or big) causing disfunction of the joints and consequently, pressure on neural structures. This means the nerve does not work at 100%. When nerves do not work properly then anything the nerve goes to (organs, tissues, muscles) also works less than 100%. When tissues and organs do not work properly then health is less than 100% so disease and/or pain result.
Stress to the spine causes of subluxations. It may come from constraint inside the womb if mom’s spine and/or pelvis is not in proper alignment. The birth process usually causes the first subluxation- especially to the head and neck when the head is turned and pulled (tractioned) while forceps/vacuums definitely cause subluxation. Learning to sit or walk is traumatic because of all the falls. Essentially, stress to the spine causes decreased nerve function and that’s why children’s spines need to be checked- so their health can be as optimal as possible.
One example is a 7-year old former patient of mine. His fine muscle control was poor. He had difficulty focusing (slowing his reading progress), difficulty controlling a pencil (writing), and his legs were hard to control so he fell a lot when running (sports). Even his tongue was hard to control so he went to a speech therapist. His mom brought him to me and I started to check his spine regularly. Soon, his school grades went up because his focus improved- his reading and writing took off and he was having a lot more fun playing sports because he was always improving.
Common health conditions which are very often helped by correcting subluxations in children include: ear infections, asthma/respiratory conditions, seizures/epilepsy, allergies, colic, breast feeding difficulties, and many more.
